No. 14 BYU football fought back from a 21-3 halftime deficit to a one-score game but an interception in the waning moments of play turned the Cougar comeback away in a nail-biter loss to No. 21 Arizona State on Saturday at Mountain America Stadium.
"What a cool environment in college football, this was awesome," head coach Kalani Sitake said. "Big 12 football. A lot of fun, obviously we didn't work out in our favor but just really proud of the team. I'm proud of the guys. I think they could have quit at any moment and so it didn't look great, especially in the first half but I'm proud of the guys fighting back."
BYU's offense was unable to find a rhythm in the first half but regrouped in the locker room and put together three second-half scoring drives. With the offense starting to click and defense getting stops, the Cougars outscored the Sun Devils 20-7 in the second half while outgaining them 326-193 and posting 19 first downs while allowing just 11.
Following Keelan Marion's second rushing touchdown of the day, BYU had drawn within a score at 28-23 with 8:44 to play. The Cougar defense delivered another chance for the offense with a stop of Arizona State on 4th-and-1 at the BYU 11 with 2:34 to play. After the turnover on downs, BYU appeared poised to go ahead with a promising drive into Sun Devil territory but an interception with 1:04 remaining cut the comeback short.
BYU had one last chance after a lengthy delay due to an early field rush by the Arizona State fans. Following nearly a 15-minute stoppage to clear the field, one second remained and a Hail Mary attempt came up two yards short.
Jake Retzlaff completed 23 of 38 pass attempts for 346 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions. Nine different BYU receivers recorded a grab on Saturday. Chase Roberts led the receiving corps with 108 yards on six grabs while Darius Lassiter also hauled in five receptions for 103 yards. LJ Martin led the Cougars on the ground with nine carries for 42 yards.
Isaiah Glasker tallied a team-high 12 tackles for the BYU defense, including two tackles-for-loss. Tyler Batty posted eight tackles while Miles Hall marked his first meaningful snaps with the Cougar defense by recording six tackles and a forced fumble.
Tanner Wall notched his third interception of the season, giving BYU the national lead in forced interceptions with 18 on the season.
BYU outgained Arizona State 440-391 while ASU led 154-94 on the ground, but the Cougars owned the advantage in red zone attempts (2-2 to 2-5) and on 3rd downs (7-10 to 7-13). Time of possession went in favor of the Sun Devils 35:05 to 24:55 for the Cougars.
