The seniors of the BYU football team, along with some freshmen stars, led the Cougars to a 40-7 victory over New Mexico on Saturday night at LaVell Edwards Stadium. With the win, BYU became bowl eligible for the sixth-straight season under head coach Bronco Mendenhall. The senior leaders on defense turned in another solid performance with linebacker Shane Hunter totaling 11 tackles, safety Andrew Rich adding two interceptions and cornerback Brandon Bradley recovering a fumble to lead the way for a BYU defense that allowed just 259 total yards and forced four turnovers. BYU’s trio of talented freshmen all made a big impact for a Cougar team that rolled up 494 yards of total offense. Quarterback Jake Heaps threw for 231 yards on 18-of-31 passing for two touchdowns. Heaps also added his first career rushing touchdown on a one-yard run in the first quarter. Wide receiver Cody Hoffman contributed with five catches for 71 yards and two touchdowns and Joshua Quezada had a career high with 107 rushing yards on 15 carries and a touchdown. BYU jumped out to a 20-0 lead at halftime with the defense forcing turnovers and giving the Cougar offense a short field. It was the fourth-straight win of the season for the Cougars.
