Despite holding the lead at three different points in the game, the Cougars could not hold on as the UNLV Rebels escaped Provo with a 24-20 win. The story of the game was turnovers. The Cougars threw one interception and lost four fumbles while the Rebels had just two turnovers. BYU did gain almost 200 more yards than UNLV, 449-259, but it was not enough.

John Beck finished the game completing 34-of-67 pass attempts for 358 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The 67 pass attempts were both BYU and MWC records. Curtis Brown had a strong game on the ground, running the ball eight times for 102 yards. It was the first time all season a Cougar had eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark.

BYU scored first on a 47-yard field goal by Matt Payne in the second quarter. UNLV came right back, scoring a touchdown to take a 7-3 lead. The Cougars struck again 14 seconds before halftime when Beck found Todd Watkins on a seven-yard scoring play.

The lead would change hands again when UNLV running back Dominique Dorsey scored early in the third quarter to give the Rebels the 14-10 advantage. Later in the third, BYU scored 10 points in a matter of eight seconds on a Payne field goal and an interception return for a touchdown by Cameron Jensen to take the lead back at 20-14.

The Rebels would not trail for long, however, scoring another touchdown late in the third and adding an insurance field goal in the fourth to go up 24-20. BYU threatened twice late in the fourth but the first chance ended in a lost fumble and the second ended as time expired.
