The Cougar running game showed what it was capable of in helping BYU win its Mountain West Conference opener at Colorado State, 31-21. Curtis Brown ran for 93 yards and two touchdowns and Fahu Tahi had 98 yards and one touchdown. As a team, the Cougars finished with 207 yards on the ground, easily surpassing the previous season high. John Beck completed 24-of-42 pass attempts en route to 238 yards, one touchdown and one interception. After a scoreless first quarter, the Cougars scored 10 in the second, three on a 52-yard Matt Payne field goal and the other seven on a 14-yard touchdown run by Curtis Brown

The Cougars lost the 10-0 advantage as the Rams scored a touchdown with less than one minute left in the first quarter and added another trip to the end zone early in the third to go up 14-10. The Cougars took the lead back with just over two minutes left at 17-14 in the third on Brown's second score of the night, only to see it slip right back to Colorado State. which scored a touchdown early in the fourth to go up 21-17. BYU responded just one minute later on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Beck to Austin Collie, giving the Cougars the lead for good at 24-21. Fahu Tahi scored his touchdown with 2:25 to play to seal the victory.
