Game Notes

First bowl game in program history.

Competing in their first postseason bowl game ever, BYU played host to the Cowboys of Oklahoma State...50,878 in attendance...the Cougars got off to a quick start with two field goals during the first quarter of action...seasoned performer and All-WAC quarterback Gary Sheide was injured in the last moments of the first quarter and replaced by Mark Giles...the Cowboys took over the scoring in the second quarter on a TD run around the left end...half-time score OSU 7 BYU 6...OSU regained possession of the ball on the Cougars' 17 yard line after intercepting a Giles to Toolson pass but were unable to convert on the turnover...a field goal from 32 yards out put the Cowboys in front 10-7 at the end of the third quarter...with 1:14 remaining in the game, OSU scored another TD on a halfback pass from the 40 to complete the scoring...the Cougars outgained the Cowboys in total yardage 301 to 214...Giles was 11 out of 26 for 138 yards.
