After jumping out to an early 10-0 lead, the Cougars were outmatched the rest of the way against the Stanford Cardinal, falling 37-10. With John Beck being injured in the previous game and Matt Berry going down on the first possession, Jason Beck got most of the playing time at quarterback, He completed 23-of-46 pass attempts for 232 yards and three interceptions. Todd Watkins caught six passes for 89 yards while Curtis Brown picked up 47 yards on 16 carries.

Brady Poppinga recovered a Stanford fumble early in the first quarter onon the Cardinal 35 and Fahu Tahi scored the game's first touchdown on a three yard run minutes later. Matt Payne added a 40-yard field goal later in the first quarter to put BYU up 10-0. Stanford's T.J. Rushing started the scoring for the Cardinal, returning the ensuing kickoff 99-yards for a touchdown. From there Stanford scored the next 30 points to take the game 37-10. The Cardinal only out gained the Cougars by 40 yards but turnovers plagued BYU.
