Going full throttle against rival Utah State, the Cougars scored in every quarter. Gifford Nielsen came out of the game with about 14-minutes remaining But he had the best day any collegiate passer had this season: 28 of 48 for 468 yards and five touchdowns. Sub quarterback Terry McEwen stepped in to go 6-for-10, to boost BYU passing yardage to 509 yards. Flanker Mike Chronister caught a total of nine for 182 yards. Tailbacks Jeff Blanc and Dave Lowry had 125 yards rushing between them. Utah State had to settle for a 3-8 record by season's end. Giff netted national honors.
