A regionally televised contest (ABC), the kickoff for the game came at 10:50 a.m. with a crowd of 31,052 on hand to see the Cougars play their first home game. In an unexpected turn of events, quarterback Marc Wilson was injured early in the second quarter and was replaced by sophomore Jim McMahon. BYU was ahead 7-0 when McMahon went onto the field. Before he hobbled off the field late in the game, Jim had helped push the score to 32-6. McMahon passed for one score (39-yarder to Lloyd Jones) and rushed eight yards for another. In all, he had 80 yards rushing and 112 passing (seven of nine). Again, the Cougars got an impressive assist from the defense. CSU had only 63 yards rushing. Reflecting on the discovery of a second starter at quarterback, Coach LaVell Edwards said, "It's nice to have quarterbacks like those two, isn't it?" McMahon was voted WAC offensive player of the week for his performance and was recipient of a $1,000 Chevrolet scholarship. Linebacker Tom Enlow received a similar award as defensive player of the game. BYU now 2-1.
