The Cougars concluded the 2004 season with a 52-21 loss to the nationally ranked University of Utah at Rice-Eccles Stadium. BYU finished 4-3 in the MWC while finishing the season with a losing record overall.
Despite losing by 31, the Cougar defense played well against Heisman hopeful quarterback Alex Smith, limiting him to 184 yards. Nate Soelberg and Spencer White both registered interceptions, doubling Smith's interception total for the season.
Curtis Brown picked up 84 rushing yards on 18 carries while Austin Collie caught three passes for 74 yards and one touchdown. John Beck completed 17-of-32 attempts for a game-high 213 yards and two touchdowns. Todd Watkins caught four passes for 41 yards and one touchdown. Watkins and Collie combined to finish the season with over 100 receptions, the first time since 1990 that BYU had two players finish with over 50 receptions.
BYU fell behind 7-0 early but tied the score on a five-yard pass from Beck to Watkins. After another Ute touchdown, Brown scored from six yards out to tie the game at 14. Utah's Alex Smith scored on a broken play with 1:19 remaining in the second quarter to put his team ahead 21-14.
Despite the close first half, Utah blew the game open in the second half, outscoring the Cougars 31-7 to win the game 52-21.
