The Cougars began the season in a grand fashion by overcoming the Texas heat and humidity to edge the Aggies on a two-point conversion with 52 seconds remaining in the game. No one would have thought the Cougar win possible after the close of the first half, when most Aggie statistics more than doubled those of the Cougars. BYU had managed to keep within four points of the Aggies, however, when BYU answered an A&M-David Brothers touchdown with a 26-yard Brent Johnson field goal kick. The Cougars fell behind still further during the first possession of the second half when the Aggies scored on a 51-yard drive. It was then that QB Marc Wilson, convalescing from a recent appendectomy, came to form, completing six-out-of-six passes at one stretch that included a 20-yard touchdown pass to Dan Plater. The second Cougar touchdown was scored after Tim Halverson partiall deflected an Aggie punt, which the Cougars capitalized on, scoring a Wilson-to-Brown touchdown. This brough the Cougars within one point of the Aggies, which was soon topped when Wilson connected with Mike Lacey in the end zone to seal the Aggie fate by one point.
