After a scoreless first quarter, the Cougars took hold of the Wildcats and never let loose, accumulating 707 total offensive yards, despite a new BYU penalty yardage record being set at 219. The scoring started early in the second period when a 1- yard Mike Lacey rush coupled with a Brent Johnson kick put the Cougars up 7-0. This was added to by a Johnson field goal several possessions later. Both plays were set up by interceptions deep in Wildcat territory. The Cougars scored three more times in the first half-on an Eric Lane rush, another Johnson field goal, and a Wilson-to-Bill Davis pass. This put the Cougars in the locker room with a 27-0 lead. The only chance the Wildcats had to light up the board was in the third quarter on a field goal kick by Roger Ruzek. They came close to scoring again, however, when Weber's Otto Ribary picked off a Wilson pass, only to be stopped by Wilson himself. That brought in backup quarterback Royce Bybee, who proved an able substitution by connecting with Matt Braga for two touchdowns. Add a Homer Jones rush and three successful extra-point kicks by Johnson, and the final score comes out 48-3. BYU now 2-0.
