The Cougars got off to a shaky start in this, their league opener, for although they opened the scoring with a field goal booted by Brent Johnson, the Miners scored with a 24-yard pass that gave them a 7-3 advantage over the Cougars in the first quarter. The homecoming crowd uttered a sigh of relief when Eric Lane rushed a yard to put the Cougars ahead of the Miners 10-7 at the half. In the third period the Cougar defense came down on the Miners and the offense sparked up as Homer Jones rushed for one touchdown and Marc Wilson connected with Scott Phillips and Kent Tingey for two more. The defense, which shut the Miners out in the second half, was led by Gary Kama. Among other accomplishments, Kama deflected a pass into the arms of Dave Francis to stop a Miner scoring drive in the first half. BYU now 3-?.
