The Cougars came out of this non-league game with nine-and-two-to-go, plus two more WAC records for Marc Wilson, in a contest sparked by the offense but regulated by the defense. (Wilson's three touchdowns gave him a career high of 56, breaking the WAC record previously held by Arizona State's Danny White and BYU's Gifford Nielson.) The scoring passes were to Bill Davis, Homer Jones, and Clay Brown. Eric Lane added a four-yard rush, and Brent Johnson kicked a 21-yard field goal plus two PATs to complete the scoring. The Forty-niners led 7-6 in the first quarter, fell behind 24-7 at the half, then scored 10 points in the third period to approach BYU's total. The Cougar defense was responsible for holding the Cougar edge as Bill Schoepflin, Glen Redd, and John Neal each intercepted CSULB passes to keep them from scoring. It was now time for the Cougars to look ahead to two games that were touted as the toughest WAC competition BYU would face all season.
