BYU offset last year's 23-22 loss to the Utes, the Cougars greatest rivals, and guaranteed themselves at least a tie for the WAC championship. They scored their first shutout of the season in front of the largest crowd in Utah football history. The Cougar defensive effort was brilliant, and the scoring came on touchdown runs of Matt Braga and Homer Jones, the two field goal kicks by Brent Johnson, and Wilson's 18-yard scoring pass to Braga. Seventeen of the 27 points were scored in the first quarter. The Cougar defense managed to hold the Utes down to 226 yards total offense, as opposed to BYU's 496. Marc Wilson became the first WAC player to tally over 7,000 yards in total offense. BYU now 10-0, with one game remaining.
