Bryce Doman caught two touchdown passes and scored on a fumble recovery in the end zone as the Cougars held off the fired-up Lobos in front of the largest crowd (33,659) ever to see a football game in the state.

New Mexico had taken a 31-27 lead in the final minute of the third quarter but John Walsh struck minutes later with a 52-yard strike to Tim Nowatzke. BYU got a scare with a minute left to play when the Lobos had a chance for a tie but Nathan Vail's 41-yard field goal attempt was barely wide to the left.

The Lobos' final drive started with 2:04 left to play after BYU fumbled the snap on a fourth-and-one play at the New Mexico 47. A pass to Zack Wesley and a pass interference call moved the ball to the BYU 23. But three incompletions forced the Lobos to try a field goal.

Eric Drage caught seven passes for 124 yards and Doman had five receptions for 111 yards. A preview of things to come during the season surfaced in this opening game with fullback Kalin Hall on the sidelines with an ankle injury and halfback Jamal Willis leaving after two carries with an ankle sprain.

Walsh completed 24 of 38 attempts for 384 yards and BYU appeared to be in control with a 27-17 lead with five minutes left in the third quarter.

But the Lobos scored twice before the end of the quarter on a night when Stoney Case ran for two touchdowns and passed for two others. After BYU took the lead for good, Oliver returned the kickoff 57 yards and New Mexico got to the Cougars' 13-yard line.

But, with 8:11 left to play, Nathan Hall sacked Case and forced a fumble, which was recovered by Randy Brock. Hall, a linebacker, led BYU with 10 tackles and weak safety Casey Mazzotta had nine.
