Despite falling behind by 21 points in the first quarter, BYU pulled to within three points before the Trojans pulled away in the final minutes of the game.

USC got on the board first after a BYU turnover gave them the ball on the Cougar 21-yard line, scoring on a one-yard pass from Matt Leinart to Mike Williams. The Trojans' next two scores came within seconds of each other on a 43-yard pass to Keary Colbert and a 16-yard interception return.

But the Cougars scored the game's next 18 points, pulling to within three. The Cougars' first score came on a safety by K.C. Bills in the second quarter, and Matt Payne added a 53-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.

The Cougars opened the second half with an 80-yard scoring drive capped off by a 14-yard touchdown strike from Matt Berry to Daniel Coats. Payne added two more field goals, including a 52-yarder, to finish the Cougar scoring before USC added two late touchdowns.
