The Cougar offense racked up 300 yards rushing and 383 yards passing for a season-high 683 yards en route to a 62-41 shootout win over Air Force. The game marked the first time since 1989 against Utah the Cougars had over 300 yards rushing and passing in the same game. The 683 yards marked the most yards the Cougars have racked up in a game since the 2001 season. In addition, the team picked up 39 first downs, equaling a team record. Curtis Brown ran for a career-high 219 yards and scored a personal-best four rushing touchdowns while John Beck completed 31-of43 pass attempts for 383 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Michael Reed caught five passes for 103 yards and his first-career touchdown. Air Force’s backup quarterback Adam Fitch entered the game for an injured Shawn Carney and threw for 265 yards and five touchdowns.
The Cougars took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a 14-yard touchdown reception by Reed and a 12-yard run by Nathan Meikle, which came immediately following a fumble recovery by Justin Luettgerodt. The Falcons scored in the second quarter before BYU added two more touchdowns, the first a six-yard run by Brown and the second a 14-yard pass from Beck to Fahu Tahi, to make the score 28-7. In the third quarter, Jared McLaughlin notched two field goals and Daniel Coats had a 15-yard touchdown reception, making the score 41-7. Air Force scored their second touchdown of the game on the last play of the third quarter with Fitch and Jason Brown hooking up for the second time on a 57-yard pass. The Falcons made it a game in the fourth, cutting the gap to two touchdowns at 48-34 and scoring a total of 27 points. The Cougars added 21 points of their own during the final frame as Curtis Brown scored three touchdowns in the quarter.
