Despite keeping the score close for much of three quarters, the Cougars were unable to contain the Notre Dame air attack and fell 49-23 to the Irish. Irish quarterback Brady Quinn threw for a Notre Dame record six touchdowns, including a school record four TD's to receiver Maurice Stovall. John Beck completed 26-of-45 attempts for 317 yards and two touchdowns, marking his eighth-career 300-yard game. Senior running back Fahu Tahi led the Cougars with 63 yards on the ground, and added 73 yards receiving. The BYU defense held the Irish to just 44 yards rushing, limiting running back Darius Walker to just 17 yards on the night. Safety Corby Hodgkiss was credited with the Cougars' only sack of the game, stopping Quinn for a four-yard loss. The defense had four tackles for a combined loss of 20 yards. Jared McLaughlin connected on a 44-yard field goal on BYU’s opening drive to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead. The Irish took the lead on the ensuing series on a 10-yard pass from Quinn under pressure to Stovall. The Cougars responded to go up 10-7 when Beck hooked up with Harline for a 12-yard touchdown to complete a 51-yard drive. Notre Dame regained the lead for good at 14-10 on Quinn's 14-yard pass to Samardzija. The Irish extended their lead to 28-10 in the second quarter before the Cougars made a run and cut the lead to 28-23. Beck scored on a 10-yard run to trim the lead to 28-17. After a Notre Dame punt, BYU cut the lead to 28-23 after Beck connected with Watkins in the endzone on a fourthdown attempt from the six-yard line. The Irish then responded with three touchdowns.
