BYU recorded back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1985 with a 44-0 win over the Wyoming Cowboys after defeating UCLA 59-0 the previous week. The Cougars improved to 4-0 on the season with the win. The BYU defensive unit rolled over Wyoming. BYU forced six turnovers and only allowed the Cowboys to convert on 4-of-13 third-down attempts, yet the defense was most impressive for returning two turnovers for touchdowns. Junior defensive back Scott Johnson returned a dropped ball from a Wyoming receiver to record a 64-yard touchdown, putting the Cougars up on the board first. The offense was unable to get much done until the second quarter when an 86-yard scoring drive culminated with a 1-yard touchdown run by Harvey Unga. The Cougars scored on their next possession when BYU junior quarterback Max Hall connected with junior receiver Austin Collie on a 62-yard touchdown reception. The Hall and Collie tandem met for another touchdown off a seven-yard pass and the Cougars finished the first half with a 27-0 lead. On its first possession of the third quarter BYU got to work quickly as Hall was 5-for-5 on the drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Unga. BYU linebacker David Nixon returned an interception for the defense’s second touchdown. The Cougars marched downfield and settled for a 31-yard field goal from freshman Justin Sorensen, which gave BYU a 44-0 lead to ride out on for the remainder of the game. Unga totaled 95 yards on the ground and Collie 122 through the air to lead the Cougars.
